I want to express my satisfaction with my collaboration with Katherine, Fatou Fall, the replacement of Kira, called Ouria. For the exposition in Dakar in June 2010, in addition to what I already have, I will be making pants and shorts for the start of summer. Photos for those models will be up soon!

Training and Exhibition (Formation et Exposition)

I participated in a training with the Peace Corps in Thies in early June. We talked about marketing and the importance of accounting and worked in collaboration with the ecotourism sector.

(J'ai participé à un formation avec Corps de la Paix à Thiès au début de Juin. Nous avons parlé de marketing et de l'importance de la comptabilité et a travaillé en collaboration avec le secteur d l'ecotourisme.)

The following weekend, we had our exposition in Dakar. It went very well. I sold my new reversible bags and hoodies without a problem. I even sold my Baye Fall dress shirts.

(Le weekend suivant, nous avons eu notre exposition à Dakar. Il s'est trés bien passé. J'ai vendu mon nouveaux sacs réversibles et les Hostess sans problème. J'ai même vendu mes chemises Baye Fall.)

I met up again with my friend Mamadou Dioum, who is a woodcarver. He works in Dakar and we discussed possibilities of collaboration. We have an idea to find a place in Dakar to teach percussion classes twice a week.

(J'ai rencontré avec mon ami Mamadou Dioum, qui est une menuisier. Il travaille à Dakar et nous avons discuté des possibilités de collaboration. Nous avons une idée pour trouver une place à Dakar pour enseigner percussion deux fois par semaine.)

Here I am with my Peace Corps partner Ouria Mara. I started accounting with her in January. Every day I write down my ingoing and outgoing activities and at the end of the month I figure out my total to know my profits.
(Ici, je suis avec ma partenaire de Corps de la Paix, Ouria Mara. J'ai commencé comptabilité avec elle en Janvier. Chaque jour, j'écris mes activités entrant et sortant et à la fin du mois je trouver mon total à connaître mes profits.)

Since November, when we had an exposition in Dakar, I have been collaborating with the Artisan Network with Peace Corps. Since then, I have received many orders from foreigners. I have been improving my products to please my clients all over the world. In March, I went to a meeting with the Network and we discussed the possibilities for future expos.

(Depuis Novembre, quand nous avons eu un exposition à Dakar, je collabore avec le Réseau Artisanale avec Corps de la Paix. Depuis, j'ai reçu beaucoup de commandes à partir des étrangers. J'ai été l'amélioration de mes produits a mes clients s'il vous plaît partout dans le monde. En Mars, je suis allé à une réunion avec le réseau et nous avons discuté les possibilités pour futures expositions.)

In April, I received my first large order for the International School of Dakar in celebration of Earth Day. They sold 55 bags immediately! At this moment, I am getting ready for the next exposition in Dakar in early June, that follows a training in Thies with many other artisans in Senegal.

(En Avril, j'ai reçu ma prèmier commande grande pour l'Ecole Internationale de Dakar en célébration de la Jour de la Terre. Ils ont vendu 55 sacs immédiatemante! En ce moment, je me prépare pour la prochaine exposition à Dakar en début Juin, qui suit une formation à Thiès avec beaucoup autres artisans au Sénégal.)

I am Matar Ndiaye, tailor and designer. I work in my own workshop in Bambey, in the region of Diourbel, Senegal, about 75 miles or 120k east of Dakar

I learned sewing techniques from my father when I was a child in the same shop where I work today. At the age of 13, I began to work full time for my father and in 2004, I received my professional certification card.

In 2000, I went to Dakar to work for my uncle in his workshop for one year and after, for a woman who needed an extra hand cutting fabric for clothing. I worked for her for some time before returning to Bambey in 2002 to start my own business in my father’s former workshop.

Currently, I have many customers in the Leona neighborhood of Bambey. I design and produce everyday clothing for men, women and children as well as for special occasions and holidays. Additionally, I design and produce clothing in preparation for artisanal expositions throughout Senegal. Since 2006, I have also designed clothing for the women chosen as Miss Bambey competing nationally for the title of Miss Senegal. The 2008 Miss Bambey was second runner-up in the zonal competition and the 2009 Miss Bambey advanced to third-place zonally.

I am an active participant in the Peace Corps Artisanal Network and regularly participate in expositions throughout Senegal as part of this network. In 2008, I also worked with the French association, ACCESS, which travels annually to Senegal. I anticipate exposing my work internationally some day.

(Je suis Matar Ndiaye, tailleur et créateur. Je travaille à mon propre atelier à Bambey dans la région de Diourbel, 120k a l’est de Dakar.

J’ai appris les techniques de couture de mon père quand j’étais un enfant dans le même atelier ou je travaille aujourd’hui. A l’âge de 13 ans, j’ai commencé à travailler en plein temps pour mon père et en 2004, j’ai reeçu ma carte d’accréditation professionnelle.

En 2000 je suis allé à Dakar pour travailler pour mon oncle dans son atelier pendant un an et après, pour une femme qui avait besoin d’un coup de main pour couper le tissu pour les vêtements. J’ai travaillé pour elle pour quelques temps avant de revenir à Bambey en 2002 pour commencer mon propre travail à l’atelier dans l’acnien ateilier de mon père.

Actuellement, j’ai beaucoup de clients dans le quartier Leona à Bambey. Je concevoir et produire tous les vêtements de jour pour les hommes, femmes, et enfants ainsi que pour des occasions spéciales et des fêtes. De plus, je concevoir et produire des vêtements en preparation pour les expositions artisanales partout au Sénégal. Depuis 2006, j’ai également conçu des vêtements pour les femmes choisies en tant que Miss Bambey competition pour le titre national du Miss Sénégal. En 2008, Miss Bambey a terminé deuxième finaliste de la competition zonale et le 2009 Miss Bambey avancés pour la troiseème place zonale.

Je suis un participant actif dans le Réseau artisanale de la Corps de la Paix et participant réguilèrement à des expositions à travers le Sénégal dans le cadre de ce réseau. En 2008, j’ai également traviallé avec l’association français, ACCESS, qui se déplace chaque année au Sénégal. Je prévois d’exposer mon travail au niveau international un jour.)
